Wadden Islands Ameland en Schiermonnikoog

If you put your head above the dike in our village Paesens you can see Schiermonnikoog (straigt ahead) en Ameland (to your left) For a day out to Schiermonnikoog you can take the ferry from Lauwersoog. When visiting Ameland you should take the ferry from Holwerd. Both Islands offer enough for a great day trip. Beautiful scenery, beaches, wonderful restaurants and shops. For young and old year-round events and attractions.

The nearest supermarket and ATM is in Anjum. Furthermore there is a traditional butcher, a cozy restaurant (which also delivers in Paesens) and a family doctor. The village has a number of historic elements such as the station building and the depot building (railway closed in 1937) The village is easily accessible and is also on the route when you go to Dokkum and Lauwersoog.

Seal Rehabilitation and Research Centre (SRRC) in Pieterburen is just over 30 kilometers from Paesens and is definitely worth a visit. Here are sick or injured seals healed and returned to the sea. The seals, who where found all over the Waddenzee and also in Paesens, Schiemonnikoog and Lauwersoog are been picked up by the seal sanctuary. Besides the shelter, the center is also specialized in research and providing information about the seals to the public.

However Dokkum is so much more, with its historic citycenter and the fortification walls, the many old buildings give you a feeling of history. Lauwersmeer National Park is a unique area, the landscape is shaped in a special way because it used to be an inland sea. Now the area is closed with a dam and salty and sweet water no longer overlap. The vastness and openness is for many animals a pleasant habitat. Especially birds enjoy the food the landscape is offering. The area is therefore a place well known to nature lovers and bird watchers. Lauwersmeer National Park is also very popular for boaters, surfers , kitesurfers and fishers. Lauwersmeer is called the portal to experience Friesland by boat.

Lauwersoog is a real fishing port, with fishing boats, fish auction, fish restaurants but it is also the gateway to the islands and the Wadden Sea. The ferry to Schiermonnikoog will give you the opportunity to visit Schiermonnikoog. However there are many more posibilities for daytrips with Lauwersoog as a starting point. There are boats where you can go out fishing, seal tours, but also a trip on a so-called rescue boat that can be sailed at high speed around the drilling tower and Engelsmanplaat. From Lauwersoog you can make various trips and then return to the great tranquility of Paesens - Moddergat.
